Get that New Year’s Resolution!

It’s a week into the New Year, and many of us are in the beginning stages of our New Year’s resolutions.  Whatever our commitments may be, we may find it a struggle to meet our goals.

One key for success is planning, and there’s a S.M.A.R.T way to do it:

  • Specific: State exactly what you want to accomplish in your goals.  For instance, if you want to lose weight, list the exact amount.
  • Measurable: Quantify your goal more specifically with regard to time and amount. “I will lose at least two pounds per week.”
  • Action: What are some strategies that will help you achieve your goal? “I will pack a lunch each day and not eat fast food.”
  • Realistic: Ensure your goals are attainable; consider any unavoidable constraints.
  • Timely: Allot a reasonable amount of time to maintain focus and motivation. Set aside time as needed to review and evaluate.

Another good practice is to record your progress.  Once you’ve set up your SMART goals, figure out the best way to keep track as you go along.  You can track progress on a calendar, an app, a spreadsheet or a personal diary.

It’s a new year—find something about yourself you’d like to improve and go for it!  With a little planning, this can be the year that you succeed and accomplish your goals.
